Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
