Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
