Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
