Be clever, play smart, and become versed in craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
