Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
