Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
