Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
